How Long Does It Take to Export Supplements From China to the US? A Real 500-Bottle Timeline

Most guides to exporting supplements from China to the US explain rules and shipping terms. Very few show how long a real order takes from the first message to the warehouse door.

This article walks through one completed private label order, with the actual dates, so you can plan your own timeline. It also lists what a US buyer should confirm before the goods ship.

The order

  • Client: Genepro Biotech, Ohio, USA. The client gave written consent to be named, and you can read the full case study.
  • Product: private label creatine monohydrate powder, 300 g bottles.
  • Quantity: 500 bottles.
  • Shipping term: FOB Guangzhou.

The timeline

Date (2026) Step Days from inquiry
July 11 First inquiry 0
July 18 Contract signed 7
July 29 Production completed 18
August 28 Delivered to the client's US warehouse 48

Three numbers matter most for planning:

  1. 7 days from inquiry to contract. This covered everything from the first message to a signed contract.
  2. 11 days from contract to finished production. A 500-bottle powder run is fast once the formula and artwork are final.
  3. 30 days from production to delivery. This is the shipping, US customs entry and delivery to the warehouse. It is the longest part of the timeline, and it sits mostly outside the factory's control.

From the first message to goods on the shelf, the whole order took 48 days.

What made it fast

  • A standard product. A creatine powder with a clear specification needs little development time.
  • A small first run. 500 bottles fit our standard minimum order, so there was no waiting for a large production slot.
  • Clear brand authorization. The brand owner signed a trademark license that authorized us to manufacture, label, pack and ship branded products. If the brand owner and the buyer are different legal entities, get this authorization in place before production starts, not after.

A custom formula, new artwork or a larger run will add time. Our guide to launch timelines by format shows how other formats compare.

What FOB means for your timeline

Under FOB Guangzhou, our responsibility ends when the goods are loaded at the port of departure. From that point, the buyer arranges the main freight and the US import side. Under DDP, the freight and duties are included in the price, and we manage delivery to your address. Neither is better in every case. FOB gives you control and often a lower freight cost; DDP gives you a single delivered price. See our DDP vs FOB guide.

What to confirm before your shipment leaves China

These are the questions to settle with your customs broker and regulatory advisor. We list them as questions because the answers depend on your company and your product.

  1. Who is the importer of record in the US?
  2. Has the manufacturing facility been registered with the FDA as required for supplements sold in the US?
  3. Has FDA Prior Notice been filed for the shipment?
  4. Who is responsible under the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) for your product?
  5. Does the label match your Supplement Facts panel, and does it meet US labeling rules?
  6. Where will the goods be delivered, and who books the final delivery appointment?

Settle these before production finishes, because fixing them after the goods are at the port causes delays and extra cost.

A planning template

Use the real timeline as a baseline, and add buffer for your situation:

  • Add time if your formula is custom or your packaging is new.
  • Add time if your first order is larger than 500 bottles.
  • Add a week of buffer for customs and delivery, since this part varies the most.

This order took about 7 weeks from inquiry to delivery. If you work backward from your launch date, start the conversation with your manufacturer at least 10 to 12 weeks before you need stock.
